GAINS is an acronym for Goals, Achievements, Interests, Networks and Skills. The following is my GAINS profile for use within networking meetings and referral partnerships. We’re very proud to work for a global client in the UK, Australia, Canada and America, looking after nearly 1,000 franchisees for them, and we have around 200 freelance copywriters at our disposal so we’re really scalable if other agencies need a hand with overflow or large jobs. Guested on the Official BNI Podcast, episode 830, with Dr Ivan Misner. Engage Web became part of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme. In April 2024 Engage Web became 15 years old, having been formed in 2009. Launched the podcast The Engaging Marketeer at #1 in the UK ‘Marketing’ chart on Apple Podcasts. Co-authored and released the book Engage & Grow: 97 Ways To Power-Up Your Business, which debuted at #1 in a number of categories on Amazon. In 2023 I wrote and delivered a TEDx talk in Chester on the subject of cyber bullying Personal: I wrote and performed a 15-minute stand-up comedy routine at Prenton Park, the home of Tranmere Rovers. Performing in aid of Wirral Mencap, Engage Web raised over £1,000 in personal sponsorship and shirt sponsorship. The event was also a competition with the six other comedians, and my performance won the audience vote. As the event was part of the Liverpool Comedy Festival, and I won, I am officially a ‘Liverpool Comedy Festival Winner’. In 2004 I wrote a two-part comic, which was published and distributed by Metrodome as an extra with the DVD box-sets of Transformers. The comic has sparked much anger in the fan community, with blog posts and even video reviews from outraged fans. At least it wasn’t forgotten! I’ve appeared on several of those Channel 5 clip shows, where they run down a list of TV moments based around a theme and have minor celebrities talk about them. The shows are repeated occasionally, and I was even on TV on Christmas Day one year. I’m faster than Alistair Campbell and Bob Geldof around the Top Gear track. I was once recognised by film director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scot Pilgrim) before he was famous while in a TV studio in London. He was a researcher on the show and wanted me to work on submissions for them for the next season. I stood him up to return home on the last train, having no idea how successful he would become. I have an IMDB listing. I made a feature film in University (co-starred, co-wrote, co-directed and co-edited). It was shown in our local cinema, featured on local news and is listed on IMDB. Successfully managed to help two of my children purchase their first properties, and all three move out to gain their independence. GAINS – Interests Business: I’m very proud that we do a good job at a fair price at Engage Web; we’ve got around 40 years’ experience between myself and Lianne, and we both hate to see people being charged a lot of money for basic WordPress template brochure sites or what appears to be cheap SEO at £100 a month when the person actually isn’t doing anything. We like to look after our team – we’re proud to offer them great benefits such as their birthday as an additional holiday, and a holiday buy-back scheme. They can work from home two days a week, and they’re very responsible guys. We help people who can write from home earn a bit of extra money whether that’s to pay a bill or help them improve their lifestyle. Personal: As I wanted to be a film director when I was younger, and even went to Cannes two years running trying to raise finance for a script I co-wrote, I am very interested in film. I’m not a film snob, however, and count Flash Gordon among my top three favourite movies. I collect Transformers. Not the power kind, the plastic robot kind. I’ve never counted but probably have well over 2,000 of them. I attend Transformers conventions every year, have some close friends I’ve made through a Transformers website (I created) and even have the word ‘Transformers’ tattooed on my arm in Japanese. I’m a Liverpool FC fan and, through Engage Web, we have two hospitality season tickets in the Carslberg Dugout lounge. I’m a big fan of Michael Jackson. I’ve seen him live four times, including once in Prague. I have an extensive collection of promo 12” records, and even had VIP tickets for his ill-fated performance at the O2 Arena in London. GAINS – Networks I’ve been a member of three BNI chapters over the years. I attend a number of property networks and regularly deliver talks at property events such as PPNs (Progressive Property Networks). I am a member of Networx, which meets once every fortnight, and a member of the Professional Speaking Association. I also count TheTransformers.Net among my networks, as we meet at
BNI Education Slots
I have been a member of BNI Chester since 2017, becoming the Education Coordinator within the first few months and delivering the chapter’s BNI Education Slots each week. Never satisfied with the style of education slots that were available online, either in video or in written form, I would always invent my own – such as the one above where I explained the importance of not using technical jargon in your weekly presentations using the medium of a game show. You can find more BNI Education Slots at the bottom of the page – feel free to use any of these at your own BNI chapters. I became the Chapter President of BNI Chester in October 2018 and, by the Spring of 2019, we had won the Pride of BNI award for the best chapter growth in the region. We took a chapter of 12 into the mid-twenties, and just outside the top 50 chapters in the UK. This is something I am particularly proud of, with everyone at BNI Chester helping to grow the group. In BNI I endeavour to help others as much as possible, especially newer members, and have also been one of the few members in the region to achieve 100 points on the traffic light system – something you achieve by giving help to other people. Recordings of BNI Education Slots The following BNI Ed Slots were recorded between 2017 – 2020. If you’re looking for a BNI Ed Slot to perform at your chapter, and you’d like to use one of these either as I’ve presented it, or to adapt it into your own words, please feel free to do so. I’m more than happy for you to use any of these. One of these ed slots has even been played during an online BNI meeting in Malta, so if you would like to use the videos themselves that is also perfectly fine.
Digital Marketing
I’ve been in the field of digital marketing since the last century, which makes me seem very old indeed. That’s only really the late 90s, but that’s when I put my first ever website live. After learning web development languages such as VB Script, CGI, Perl and a spattering of JavaScript in my own time, I designed and built a number of websites for personal use and to promote my film work. One such website, for my hobby of collecting Transformers, utilised animated GIFs before they were the popular craze they are today. Back then I had to capture video and create the GIFs myself one frame at a time, in true animation style. This trend-setting effort actually caught the eye of the marketing manager at GAME, who loved both the idea and the application of the animations I had produced. This simple technique was instrumental in me becoming the web designer for GAME in 2000. At GAME I worked on the website, online multiplayer platform, corporate website and the digital TV channels for Sky and NTL.If you remember shopping on GAME’s Sky Open (just press the button!) channel, that was me. After GAME I worked for a number of design agencies around the UK, in Bristol, Cardiff and Manchester, before co-founding Engage Web in 2009. Engage Web Engage Web was formed, originally, as a content marketing agency. We started by supplying a number of digital marketing and SEO agencies around the UK with content, or ‘blogs’. This was a relatively new thing in the industry around 2009, as much of the digital marketing industry was still built on the unethical rental of links from low-quality foreign websites. Despite this always being against Google’s TOS (terms of service) it was still something that a great many digital marketers founded their businesses on. At Engage Web we knew this was no basis on which to build an agency as it was bad for the client and would, eventually, be undone by a Google update. With our content writing team we were producing thousands of blogs per month both for other agencies and for our own clients. Over the years we have produced in excess of 100,000 blogs. Every single one has been written, copy-checked and edited before being delivered to the client. At Engage Web we work with clients ranging from one-man bands to global companies across different continents. Our philosophy has always been to do right by the end user and not the search engine, and to turn our clients’ websites into the best resources online for their industry. We have always achieved success for our clients by providing their clients and customers with everything they are looking for, which is why our clients are found first.
Public Speaking
It is said that public speaking is one of the greatest fears anyone can have. For me, however, it’s quite the opposite. I feel more at ease addressing 200 people than I do speaking with just one. My first taste came in school when, after winning the class vote for a speech on politics I had written and delivered, I had the ‘reward’ of delivering alongside the other class winners in front of the whole school. It was more a stand-up comedy routine than a speech and, in my own biased opinion, I was by far the best. However the teachers didn’t see it that way, and I didn’t win. A clear fix. Undaunted I have since taken every opportunity I have been given to speak in front of an audience, with my time at BNI delivering education slots affording me a regular captivated crowd. You can see more of the BNI Education Slots I delivered here. Other forays into public speaking I have dabbled with include writing, performing (and winning with) a stand-up comedy routine in aid of Wirral Mencap, speaking on a panel at search and social conference SAScon, being interviewed in a series of TV shows for Channel 5 (some of which you will find on YouTube) and, of course, being the big gob at the front when I ran the Chester BNI meetings for 12 months.
